EXCEL: Technology and Exercise Adherence

Trial Description: EXCEL is the EXercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well Study. This study provides an exercise program to Canadians living with and beyond cancer.
The purpose of the EXCEL trial is to investigate the effectiveness of a smart phone application for supporting physical activity in remote and rural cancer survivors within an online-delivered exercise oncology program.
Who is eligible to participate in this study?
To be eligible, participants must:
• Have/had a cancer diagnosis
• Be pre-cancer treatment, receiving treatment, or within 3 years of treatment completion
• Able to participate in mid/moderate physical activity
• 18+ years old and able to consent in English
What does participation in this study look like?
Participation includes an 8-12 week exercise program of low to moderate intensity (depending on the program offered in your area), two fitness assessments, a series of questionnaires completed four times throughout the year, and follow-up questionnaires annually for up to 5 years. A fitness professional that has participated in extensive training to work with people having experienced cancer will be moderator during online exercise session. They will observe participants to insure there are no issues in performing activities, provide modified exercises as well as answer questions. In addition, an on staff physician provides oversight of the enrollment process and in the event of non emergency issues during the program.
How much does it cost to participate?
There is no cost associated with enrollment in this study, however, participating at some partnering facilities may result in indirect costs such as parking fees.
