Our History

In 1998, Barry Stein, along with several doctors, pharma representatives and advertising leaders, founded the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada (CCAC), after he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC). That same year, Bunnie Schwartz founded Colon Cancer Canada to honor her late husband and sister who were both diagnosed with colon cancer.

Both organizations worked hard to carve paths of change. From introducing clinical guidelines to spearheading the Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registries Proposal, advocacy efforts resonated with healthcare officials, leading to the launch of provincial and territorial colorectal cancer screening programs. They became beacons of hope for patients and loved ones looking for support and a community that could understand their unique needs. Events such as Push For Your Tush, Bowlin’ For Your Colon and Kick Ass Golf Tournament were created to rally the community, raise awareness about Colorectal Cancer and support those touched by the disease.

Driven by a shared purpose, Colon Cancer Canada and CCAC joined hands in 2017. Their common cause laying the bedrock for a transformative journey through Colorectal Cancer Canada. Today, Colorectal Cancer Canada is Canada’s leading organization dedicated to colorectal cancer and cancer advancements. Our comprehensive programs cover a wide range of areas such as awareness, advocacy, research, health equity, and support to ensure a better quality of life for current and future patients.
